Bad link above. Try this one:

Last comment. You seem to be having a nice moment with what could be your final tuna/egg salad sandwich combo. Definitely won't find that freshness at a 7-11 in the States. Gotta love the 120yen drink selection too....

What a summer - saying sayonara to Japan and getting married, with the world at your feet. As Lou Reed says, this is the Beginning of a Great Adventure. Tanoshinde! I've enjoyed following your podcasts and it sounds like you've enjoyed making them. Brings back memories for me of living and working in Tokyo, freshly married and before children - just like yourself now. Hope you can keep Finding Japan and Beyond alive. Many in your current audience will follow, and you'll pick up new listeners as you broaden your horizons.

One comment about overdosing on American political news while abroad. Your observation is correct. Those living in the US are able to take it in small doses, since there's endless celebrity gossip to distract us. I was just listening to this podcast walking the dog this evening, then read this column in the morning paper. This is what really passes for news in this country, but I like the guy's editorial comments.

Good episode. Hmm, I have been listening since BEFORE Day 1 (last post you made when I joined was with the Japanese Apple commercial), is it even possible to pick merely ONE thing I remember of this series? Perhaps a top (random number) moments on Finding Japan (I actually was going to suggest this to you on the Ep. 62 comments... btw, where's the pics. of the cat?)? You pick the number. Oh, and do we have to submit an audio clip with our favorite moments, or can you quote us on the episode? But man, such a great series, I've loved it and I feel it deserved the award it got. I'm going to be real upset that it ends. But hey, maybe you can come back someday and have a "what Japan feels like after being gone so long" episode? Who knows... Here's to hoping for an awesome ending to the podcast! ^_^

Hi Christopher,

Wow we got a mention, seems kind of cool after listening for so long.

There's definitely going to be a number of people who are going to miss the podcast, subjects discussed, and areas travelled through.

It's making me think, if I do a stint in Japan should I do some kind of blog podcast as well... I really wouldn't know how to put together, I'm a PC user, and wonder if there is some easy to use software that now makes the process nice and easy.

Looking forward to the last couple podcast.

Enjoy your last couple of weeks.

Hey Christopher,

Best wishes for the future!
I have been listening roughly since ep.15, (and of course checked the old ones since), and got used to my regular FJ fix, so I almost feel nostalgic now... ;)

By the way, I am in Dublin too, so if there is any meet-up of some sort, you can count me in! :)

Hi,

Just wanted to drop you a note, have been listening to your podcast a few months now. I'm based in London and love things about Japan, try to visit each year and explore.

Sad to hear your Podcast might be coming to an end shortly, this is the first time I've looked at your blog though, so go to tie into what you are actually doing.

Anyhow, great podcast and interesting style (not like some others, so that is good to have a mix of J Podcasts).

Thanks for the all the info and work.

Regards,

Rob.

@leanne: Don't worry, the pain is not too bad. One week should be about okay but I would check with your doctor. About the sneezing, you won't have to worry about that. Its impossible when you have the packing. I did not have the desire to sneeze while I had the packing in at all.

This was an awesome episode. I loved hearing (and understanding) the Japanese. I enjoyed your careful pronunciation. This is what I get for not finishing the episode before commenting :)

My wife fell in love with the Milk Tea when we were in Japan last May. I thought it was pretty good too. I had the Taiwanese equivalent from a kind of milk tea cafe. It was awesome. They added the tapioca balls in the bottom of the cup. In Taiwan at least, they're not distinguishing between milk tea and bubble tea. It's all milk tea.

There used to be a place called Lollicup here in Charlotte that served the bubble tea. It was pretty tasty, but closed down for some reason. I guess the appreciation hadn't developed enough around here.

@Geekly You know, I'm not quite sure. I know Iidabashi in the morning heading towards Tokyo gets pretty bad, probably close to this. This video it looks like an above ground train so my first guess is JR but it could also be one of the subway extensions that go above ground further out away from Tokyo. I found this video on YouTube so I don't have much info on it unfortunately. Gomen ne.

I like the guy who just shoves his shoulder in and hopes for the best. Today I took the train in at around 8:00pm instead of the usual 7:30am. Still squished but no this bad, all I could think about was this video.

I wonder exactly which stations/lines get this bad. Does JR or just the metro? I've been on a train that had pushers standing by, but they never had to spring into action. We probably missed heavy rush hour by only a few minutes.

EXCELLENT cast Chris! This is definetely one of my favorite episodes. Now, let me just say before I go on that I do enjoy the episodes where you talk about Japan life more and still look forward to your commentary (just so it doesn't sound like I'm saying my favorite episode is the one episode you don't talk in). Anyhoo, I really enjoyed these sounds. It helps both to pass the time while I'm doing my schoolwork and it also really helps me illustrate Japan in my head (good gracious I want to go so bad). Very, VERY entertaining and it even inspires at times (kinda like how certain songs do for me). I look forward to when you'll do this again, but of course, I do look forward to another episode with your own commentary (and with some background noise as well :-p) to be out soon!

PS: Clever idea with the Asian intermissions between sounds. Before I listened I was wondering how I was going to distinguish the sounds without you telling when a new one comes up. Very cool idea.

Oh by the way...from the sounds of your miracle fruit eating journey, I've gathered that you crunched up the seed, which is toxic and tastes horrible...chew a miracle fruit seed...just clean the seed.

You're back? You were gone?

Anyway, you're right about the US/Brazil visa, they charged us only because we charge them. However, Japanese citizens need a visa to visit Brazil (as Hernan's girlfriend found out last year at the airport as she was on her way to São Paulo).

@Ryan and Luke: The septoplasty operation seems like so long ago. The post operative pain level is completely bearable. Full recover takes some time, maybe two months. The pain goes away slowly and your nose will be "tender" for a few months. Just as long as you don't push on it too hard, you will barely notice.

Also, getting the packing out is not as bad as I thought it would be. If I had to go through the process again, I would do it. Best of luck with your surgeries (if they have not already occurred).

WHOO, you're back! Yeah, I was trying to bite my tounge earlier because I knew something was probably up and I didn't want to pressure you, but I did miss the podcast just so you know! :D In regards to the episode, I think these tips may be useful for me by the time I go to Japan (if I ever do soon >_>). so it was a pretty good episode and I can't wait for the next. Also, I think your idea for a sound tour episode is great and I'm sure many (myself included) would enjoy it. Personally I enjoy the sounds where you can hear a bunch of people talking (whether it be to you or just in general) and where you can hear all the loud, awkward ads or shows going on. So I look forward to that episode as well! ;D

Also, I think your idea for a sound tour episode is great and I’m sure many (myself included) would enjoy it. Personally I enjoy the sounds where you can hear a bunch of people talking (whether it be to you or just in general) and where you can hear all the loud, awkward ads or shows going on. So I look forward to that episode as well! ;D

Thank you so much for this episode...
looks like we have a lots in common!

For some time Im trying to figure out the structure and idea for my podcast.
After this episode I realized that its not necessary good idea to focus on one particular thing and ignore all other points of interest. Such as Art, stock investing, technology...

I always tought that with such a spread of topics I will never be able to find any audience at all.

This episode (one of the best Ive ever heard) changed my mind.

Thanks a lot. I will update you with my first episodes once ready :)

take care !

@emmettjcat: Thanks. I'm glad that I was able to help you. I promise I will get another out as soon as I can. My silence has been happy and restful so far, considering.

@Whitely et. al. Yes I know. I apologize terribly. Between being sick for about 2 months, taxes, equipment issues, and a host of other things its been hard to get the stars to align. I appreciate the kind words though. I have recorded two segments that just need to be edited and have more sound tours for all of you.

@Carl - Hey thanks for the detail on that DS game. I will try to find it and see if that helps my studies as well.

@Pat - I use an Edirol R-9. Fantastic little piece of hardware that I highly recommend. Look it up!

Hello,
I started listening a little while ago and have now gone through all your podcasts. Like a lot of people have already noted, it's cool to sort of relive my Japan experiences by listening to you go through your own. It's been an enjoyable time. One thing, have you mentioned how you are making your portable/sound tours? I was wondering about your hardware-you've already mentioned what programs you use. Did I miss this.
Thanks,
Pat

Chris,

It has been nearly a year since I've commented on your podcast. I'm busy with school but I still listen when I've got a chance. As far as what you said about learning kanji...I've been using the DS Software 大人の感じ練習　to both review and learn kanji.

I briefly mentioned it on my blog/podcast last year (see above). I think its is hard to learn kanji with this DS Software unless you have the characters reinforced with a some thing else, either a book, paper flashcards or some thing that gives you the English meaning with the character.

As this tool is made for Japanese people, it does not give you the English and so a lot of words it uses to help you lean the kanji are words I haven't learned yet but are words I should learn. I often keep my Japanese dictionary with as I'm doing the characters. I tend to memorize the kanji better if I get the English meanings for the words while I'm practicing it.

I like the study system the software uses because you have a "Daily Review" of characters which you can test your self on after you have reviewed them. It won't let you pass a test for the next group of kanji until you score at least an 80%. It keeps track of every kanji you missed on the tests and stores it in your "heta" kanji list. One you have re-reviewed the kanji in the "heta" list it is taken off. However, if you miss it again on a test, it will get put back into the heta list. I've found it great a tool which I can take with me where ever I go and just spend 15-30 minutes a day with it.

I have different profiles setup, one with my age as 0, one with my true age and one with my age as a middle school student. If you set your age as zero it forces you to review and be tested on every single kanji before you can continue to the next test. This is forcing me to re-learn and master a lot of characters. If you set your age higher, you can skip a lot of the tests for Elementary age students and just start on the more advanced tests.

The software allows you to review at any level you want at any time.

Good luck,

Carl

Kanji project ?
like every body learning japanese I have to digest some kanji and I don't find any perfect way to learn them.
In book (I a few on the subject), the best I found is the kanji learners dictionary, very clean, easy lots of example per reading ...
I learn kanji (following minna no nihongo) in words and after some time start to know some on/kun an be able to pickup more easily new word.
I find kanji card where you just learn the naked kanji, it's on, kun, it's drawing ... to dry for me, I need some meat around it to learn it better.
If you plan to make a software/website, I am interested, I thought on that too, but never find the perfect way to do it so it's still a plan in in procrastinaton book.
(WhiteRabbitPress cards are pretty good because they have lots of examples on it with jlpt level tag).
There was a discussion on WhiteRabbitPress forum about what every is looking in a new tool to learn Kanji.

@aaron: Thanks. Hopefully I won't take too much time.

@saya: ちょう疲れていたよ！！ :(

@karamoon: Woah nice. Even better that they have a website. Thanks for sharing that with the folks here on the comments. Yeah we will be there Sunday, I just sent off a mail to you.

@kuma: Thanks for the recommendation, I will see if I can find that. Its not on iTMS so I'll have to dig around.

@Scott: Nice nice nice!!!! Tuesday night jazz around the world! You'll have to let me know where that is so the next time I'm over in those woods I can check it out.

@Drew: I'll see what I can do. I am always putting aside music for future shows. I think I have a list here somewhere...

@steve: Definitely, and thanks for the tip. The flavia machine at work actually dispenses hot water only for free so I may take that route. There is 178 yen coffee there too (at another shop) but its not nearly as good.

@Mark: Those cards look great. I think I'll even get the Kana ones for Linda. I've got this idea in my head with how I want to "see" Kanji. A bit like San described but more interactive. I'll have to think it through a little more. Thanks for the link!!

@San: Its all love. I've gotta get back on the horse with studying Japanese. I actually feel like I'm loosing so much of it. I'm getting lazy. : - (

@Alex: But but but .... its Windows. 出来ないよ！

About Kanji learning, have you checked this program out?

http://www-alg.ist.hokudai.ac.jp/~jan/kangoroo.html

I use it all the time. It's a japanese and kanji dictionary that let you make a list of kanjis and vocabulary you know, and let you see all the words that use a given kanji, starting with the ones you marked as known. It also allows to recursively remember kanjis by combination of building blocks.

I don't care about these other people, but you will apologise to me. Oh yes you will...

Kanji? There is a way I do it, but the problem is that everyone is different :( Why everyone can't be like me is beyond all comprehension! I use elements of Kanji to remember them easily, starting with radicals and moving on from there. I am a pretty visual person, so Kanji is easy for me. How are you finding it?

Thanks for the dedication. Whalers for life yo.

Hi Christopher,

If you have been studying Japanese, you have already probably come across these - but in the off chance you haven't check out White Rabbit Press's kanji flash cards.

http://www.whiterabbitpress.com

I'm not sure if they do the kind of grouping you were describing, at first glance it doesn't appear so, but I've only used their kana flashcards so far.

To that end, I highly recommend them. They have the same size and texture of playing cards, so they are durable and you can keep a deck with you. Then you can pull them out when you've got a couple free minutes throughout the day.

I was really surprised how much more quickly I learned the kana than with the other methods I had tried. I bought the first kanji set but haven't started learning them yet.

Also, if the flashcards above don't do what you would like, you could try contacting the author - Max Hodges. It seems like he is usually looking for new product ideas, so maybe he'd be interested to hear your thoughts and put something together.

If you drink a ton of coffee...another way to save on coffee at the office is buy a big jar of instant coffee at the grocery store. Then take it to work with a spoon and a mug. I assume your office is like all the ones I have seen and they have extremely hot water available for tea and instant noodles. I used to drink instant coffee at my old job (now my current employer provides free coffee) and I spent a ton on vending machines, so I went the instant route. Not the best taste, just a money saver tip.

Actually, those musical interludes make the show better - more composed, somehow. They could even be longer.

Hello my friend, I thought I'd up the ratio of commentors to downloaders. I can empathize on the crappy dollar, though the euro has only gained about 3% in the two months I've been here, which isn't as bad as the 12% or so that it fell when I was in Brazil. And fyi, I've found a Tuesday night jazz place here. They're like Irish pubs, wherever you go in the world, some club is going to have a jazz night.

Going back to Armstrong, you might like "Impressions of Japan" by David Brubeck. As far as I know, this is the only Jazz CD based off the "Japanese sound" for a lack of a better term (I would love to hear another if you've got one); and its Brubeck, so you can't go wrong. I recommend "fujiyama"

What a great little podcast cast you have here Chris. I just discovered it a few weeks ago and I've been hooked ever since. Who would have guessed that commentary recorded over the sound of boots trudging through snow in route to McDonald's could be so compelling? Keep it up!

Another excellent episode. I was astounded by the amount of noise from the advertising on the streets. I can't imagine what that must be like to someone who can understand It :/ For some reason I keep being surprised by the amount of traffic noise as well.

One thing that I thought was especially amusing was a bit of sound buried in the back of part of the recording. It's something I don't recall ever hearing before in any "in the wild" Japan podcasts I've listened to - the sound of a misbehaving child. I think it was as you were getting off the train and looking for exit 42; there in the mix was the sound of a squalling kid. I guess it just caught my ear as a parent, but it was something I hadn't heard before.

Good stuff as always, keep it coming.

This episode was fun to say the least, another that I was upset when it was over cuz I was having a good time (btw, what the heck was that werid commercial thing at the end?). Kind of cool how your washing machine makes music, oh, and I didn't know subway station announcements played in English (though I guess it's secondary like Spanish is here). Anyway, yeah I DEFINETELY feel sound tours episodes are more entertaining and fun than regular episodes, especially when you're doing commentary or taking us into a busy shopping plaza like the one from the Guitar Hero episode. Lot's of funny sounds and friendly (if not just plain weird) sounding people. Looking forward to the next episode:
RRR =D (I'm starting to like this internet identity, even though this one out of my multitudes is only used here and on iTunes)

A very interesting episode, thanks for the metal door bits too. :) Had a bit of audio that drowned out your speaking (when the train came into the station) but other than that, a very pleasant trip. Always love listening to the sounds of Tokyo, as they differ quite a bit from the ones I hear while I walk to work. :D

Hope you are enjoying your time with Linda. Please get sick of her and podcast instead :)

Speaking of White Day, Korea has another one, not sure if Japan does, called Black Day. That's the 14th of April when all the people who couldn't get dates on Valentines/White Day get together and eat Jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles). Sad huh?

I liked the sound scape, although some times I couldn't hear you over the loudness from Tokyo. I guess that's why people like places like Tokyo. It explodes on the senses!

Chris, I enjoyed this podcast. I will be very interested to hear a follow-up in the future about how your plan of how you want your time works out. (Perhaps a future "Letters to my Future Self" segment?) I have found that it's hard to maintain such a schedule without having any interaction with other people as part of the process. Let me give an example: I was taking a Japanese class which I was not very happy with last year; so I decided that rather than paying several hundred dollars to take it and being unhappy with it (plus it was quite a ways from my house) I would just study on my own. However I found that without that regular forced interaction with others it was really hard to maintain the discipline to keep up the studying. Now maybe this just says something about me and my lack of self-discipline, but I think that for many people, without any sort of interaction with other people, be it a class, friends, family, online community etc., it's difficult to maintain momentum on projects such as these. I don't think it necessarily has to be something as formal or structured as a class; I think something like a biweekly writers' group or something following that model would work just as well.

I have been thinking about this a lot because I have been wanting to learn to draw (or at least draw better), so I bought a simple how-to book and have been trying to work through it. I have a hard time getting starting practicing the exercises they recommend, although I do enjoy it once I get going. It's hard to force myself to do it when I've gotten home from work, exercised, cooked dinner with the wife etc. and there is only an hour or two of truly discretionary time in each day. So as I say, I will be very interested to hear how this time management experiment works out for you--maybe you can write the unofficial sequel to Getting Things Done if it does!

This was a great episode with some funny points, good stories, and good audio. Funnily enough, I need to do the same (make a schedule) because I waste a lot of time taking a "break" from schoolwork because I'm pooped and I want to do what I enjoy. But you mentioned how you were on the computer for fun when you were on the computer all day at work... same with me... yet like in your case it's the only thing that entertains me. THEN I wind up getting hardly anything done. So yeah, good episode and it's kind of funny that you and I are/were in the same situation. ;)

Nice job on the podcast I enjoy them for I am coming to japan in a bout a month, I will be in Shibuya, Shinjuku and maybe another spot I havent mapped it out yet. But I was interrested in the type of recorder you use for you podcast, the sound quality is nice... From what I am told most people use their MacBook and through Garageband mix it down but it seems you have a digital voice recorder. So please respond soon..

I agree that trying to spend your time efficiently is a good idea if you want to get a lot done, but I think somethings are just better done if you don't think about time. I used to do a lot of B&W photography, and when developing, I came to realize that if I actually want to get a good picture out, it might take an hour or two to produce one picture; if you try to speed up the process, the pictures never turn out as well. In retrospect, it was kinda nice to lose track of time (which is really easy in a dark room), and just immerse yourself in what you are doing.

On a completely different note, its odd to be three comments down without a post from San.

So I googled for Saizeriya, and found their site. I clicked a random link (since I can't read Japanese), and apparently came across a menu. I saw this:

http://www.saizeriya.co.jp/cgi-bin/menu/views.cgi?n=9

which includes something my kids would get in their grade school lunchroom. A bare hot dog, a bare hamburger patty, a few potato wedges, a ball of rice, cup of applesauce(?), and... a few shrimp? I hope that's the kid's menu I found :)

And the apologizers came out sounding just fine. I was wondering what hey were apologizing about when I heard them, so thanks for the explination.

This episode came out sounding really good. I knew what the splat was the first time I heard it, because I've been hearing similar sounds around here lately :) I was listening to part of your walking segments while walking through my own slush, so it was kind of weird and disorienting to hear the squishing when I wasn't stepping or dodging stuff.

And was it just me, or did your McDonalds worker sound quite happy? I don't usually hear that pleasant a tone of voice in the ones around here.

I actually wasn't going to listen to this episode because it was about alcoholic beverages and I don't drink alcohol... but I decided to listen to it for it's other topics and I actually had a genuinely good time. The story about the first aid crew with the helmets made me laugh and think as if you were in some sort of futuristic anime at the time (and the story in general was humorous). The music you added was kind of catchy, and I actually picked up some Japanese words in the sound tour! Japanese people must be really friendly huh? (the people in the sound tour sounded nice, and I a lot of times hear people freely come up to you and make friendly conversation you in the sound tours, which can be a rarity back in the states depending on where you live...) Good episode!

This is probably one of my favorite episodes in a while... I was enjoying the sound tour A LOT. Anyway, that story about your current CEO trying to get to know his employees was pretty interesting. I kinda hope more companies get like that so maybe more can actually enjoy their workplace and who they work for. Oh, btw, it's a good thing that you live in Japan because there's one game you can get that everyone else in the world wants (well, almost everyone else)... if you've gotten a Wii by now, you can get the SMASH hit Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Seriously, almost all the reviews for that game have been 10/10, or one of the greatest game ever made, and it's the seventh game to get 40/40 from Famitsu. Tips & Tricks even openly called it THE greatest game ever made! Trust me, even if you haven't played the first two Super Smash Bros. games (which I hope you have played them), you will LOVE this game ESPECIALLY if you're a Nintendo fan! =D

Yeah, very good ears. Its a metal door with a touchpad keyless entry. Not sure if its really typical or not though. I think most new apartment buildings have metal doors since they are more fire-proof. :)

Its a strange train that leaves from Toyosu and makes that route over reclaimed land across Ariake and Odaiba, over the rainbow bridge and into Shimbashi. Its quite a cool route if you ever ride it just for fun. Highly recommended.

Also, see here for the other video of some of the ride:

What exactly is the Yurikamome? It looks like a airport tram, but obviously it couldn't be since Narita is too far away.

A very interesting episode Christopher. Loved hearing the crunch and sploosh of the snow/slush as you were walking, as well as the short discussion in McD's. Was wondering though -- sounded like a metallic clang when you closed your front door. Is it metal, and is this typical for japanese housing?
